This is not a new topic, in 2015 we covered that Google implied external links are not a ranking factor and in 2016 we covered that Google said external links are NOT a ranking factor and then a third-party study said external links ARE a ranking factor. Got to love it, right?

In any event, in the Friday Google hangout at the 27:34 minute mark on Google+, John Mueller addressed it again, but didn't say out right that it was not a ranking factor. Although he implied it again.

Question:

Do
links within the page to other pages influence quality of that page?
How can you tell that the user found what he was looking for when he
landed from the search results of the page containing links to other
pages?

Answer:

Sometimes
links on the page can improve the quality of a page, but I think that's
something where you wouldn't want to see that as kind of an artificial
factor. Just because there are links on a page doesn't mean it's
necessarily good.

We saw that, I don't know, way in the
beginning, when people would put links to Google, or Wikipedia, or CNN
on their website, and assume that search engines would be naive and
think, oh, they're linking to these well-known websites, therefore, the
content itself must be good.

And that's definitely not the case.

So
you can add value to your website by having links on those pages, but
it's not the case that just because you have links then we'll suddenly
see your website as being higher quality.

Watch it yourself:

Yesterday I reported on webmaster chatter around a lot of shuffles in the Google search results and named it Google Search Algorithm Juno Blizzard.

It isn't a massive update, like you'd see with a Penguin refresh but some speculated it might have been a small Panda refresh.

Google's John Mueller and friends, in a Google Webmaster Hangout on Google+ said at 5 minutes and 46 seconds in that the update we reported here was not related to Penguin or Panda as far as they know.

John Mueller said, "I don’t think it is related to Penguin or Panda at the moment," adding that Google makes tons of changes each day so it is hard to say.

Just like the east coast weather reporters were anticipating a huge storm in New York, it turned out to be much less. Here too, the update I thought would be turning into something bigger, seems a lot less. But yes, there are noticeable shifts both in snow accumulations in New York and in the Google search algorithm - but not blizzard type.

“Hummingbird” is the name of the new search platform that Google is using as of September 2013, the name comes from being “precise and fast” and is designed to better focus on the meaning behind the words. Read our Google Hummingbird FAQ here.

Hummingbird is paying more attention to each word in a query, ensuring that the whole query — the whole sentence or conversation or meaning — is taken into account, rather than particular words. The goal is that pages matching the meaning do better, rather than pages matching just a few words.

Panda 4.0 release is rolling out today and we've been seeing signs of major changes and reports of major changes in the Google search results and rankings.
Some are suspecting a massive Penguin update is about to hit, while others think it might be a Panda refresh and others think it is just Google's normal actions on link networks. It is almost impossible to tell without a confirmation from Google, for all we know, it can be all three or more. But Matt Cutt clear in his tweet that Panda 4.0 rolling out today.

1. Cloaking

You can design your website to be efficiently catalogued by Google, and you can specify which sites should be cached or ignored by Googlebots. Designing your Web site so that search engines see one thing and visitors see totally different content is called cloaking. This can be done with redirects or with programming, and it's strictly verboten.

Nobody likes to be tricked this way. If they're looking for a website on knitting, they'll be very ticked to end up on a website about horses. Or ads. Let's face it, the redirected site is never about anything fun.

Cloaking your Web site is a sure-fire way to get banned from Google and probably the worst thing you could do for Google.

2. Duplicate Content

Spam sites sometimes try to collect page views by duplicating the same content on multiple pages.

Don't copy and paste large amounts of text from your own pages, and certainly don't violate copyright by copying content from elsewhere. Google has been known to ban sites that duplicate too much content or at least severely penalize their ranking in search results.

This can occasionally cause problems, because some spamming Web site might be duplicating your content. If you find someone violating your copyright this way, you can let Google know.

3. Have a Robot Write Your Web Site

Just as it's a bad idea to duplicate content, it's a worse idea to get a machine to write your content for you. There are programs out there that duplicate the same content but make a few changes here and there. If Google catches you, and they're pretty good at catching this, you can kiss your page views goodbye.

Write your own content. That's as simple as it gets. Don't buy "instant AdSense" Web sites. If this really made lots of passive money, they wouldn't be selling them.

4. Add Keywords that Don't Relate to Your Content

Meta keywords aren't that important to Google anymore. However, when you list keywords, do list keywords that directly relate to your site, and don't repeat the same keyword multiple times. Spamming keywords by listing every word in the dictionary is a great way to have your ranking lowered in Google.

Likewise, don't use the trademarked names of products made by your competitors as keywords. At best it's a bad user experience, at worse it can get you sued by those competitors.

5. Link Exchanges and Bad Neighborhoods

Linking ordinarily would make you a good neighbor and a good citizen of the Internet. However, just because someone links to you does not obligate you to link back to them. Sometimes you do get judged on the quality of the friends you keep. Google calls spamming sites bad neighborhoods, and linking to them could lower your PageRank.

Link exchanging programs, paid link placement, and other schemes to manipulate PageRank are far worse sins. You may get away with it for a while, but eventually Google will catch onto the sceme, and your search results will drop like an anchor. This is essentially what happened in the JC Penny's incident. The SEO firm they hired (and subsequently fired) created an artificial web of links.

6. Hide Text

Don't try to hide keywords by making the background color the same as the font color. This is called keyword stuffing or font matching. Google and other search engines are increasingly sophisticated at catching this, and they'll likely remove any offending Web sites from their search engine index.

Likewise, watch how small you make the text. In a variation of keyword stuffing, some people try to put teeny tiny text at the bottom of a page. It doesn't work.

7. Title Stacking

The old way people used to cheat on this was to add extra
tags to try and add more keywords into the very important
field. The new way people try to do this is by adding titles with dashes "Pie Crust Recipes - Cherry Pies - Apple Pies - Peach Pies."

That sort of titling system was highly recommended by SEOs for a while, now it's very out of favor and will probably lower your search engine ranking.

These days you're better off figuring out a clever title for social media sharing instead of using it as a way to stuff in extra keywords.

8. Doorway Pages

Doorway pages or Gateway pages are pages that are optimized for one key term but are really designed to be gateways to lead you to different content. For instance the "blueberry," "strawberry," and "orange" gateways might all be designed to get you to go to "fruit punch."

Doorway pages usually have very little in the way of original content and often cloak or redirect users to the intended Web site. Be aware of affiliate programs, because some of these may look like doorway pages to Google.

9. Automated Inquiries

Google doesn't appreciate robots writing your content, and they're even less appreciative of robots checking your ranking. Automated Google queries and automated link submission are both against Google's terms of service, and both of them can get your site banned. They tie up computing resources for everyone.
Google’s head of search spam, Matt Cutts, announced that Google has
released a refresh of its Page Layout Algorithm. The filter, also known
as the Top Heavy algorithm, downgrades the ranking of a web page with too many ads at the top or if the ads are deemed too distracting for users.

Google heard complaints from users that if they click on a result and
it’s difficult to find the actual content, they aren’t happy with the
experience. Rather than scrolling down the page past a slew of ads,
users want to see content right away.

Just after Google announced that its new search algorithm, Hummingbird, had taken flight, SEO professionals began trying to figure out what it meant for them and their clients. Hummingbird marks the biggest overhaul of the algorithm since Caffeine in 2010, affecting 90 percent of searches.

The latest update is able to better interact with the user, as it can now more accurately understand the subtleties of human language to produce relevant results. As Google can now interpret users’ long-tail search queries better than before, SEO professionals should focus on creating content that satisfies those queries. Here are some ways to adapt to the changes:

1. Analyze users’ intent to create better content. Any piece of content can be written well, but it must first serve a purpose as Hummingbird will only retrieve pages that offer the most tailored information. First, consider the types of search queries users search for. Having content that satisfies specific questions with conversational keywords -- as well as their synonyms, as Hummingbird focuses on semantic search -- sprinkled throughout the page where applicable is a better bet. Consider these types of content:

How-to’s: Users looking for step-by-step instructions would find this type of content educational and easy to follow. How-to guides can be adapted to numerous industries.

“Top…” lists: Lists, such as “Top 10 SEO Tips” or “5 Best Ways to Write an Article,” are easily shareable on social media. They are often popular due to their brevity, clarity and usefulness.

Frequently Asked Questions: If a website has a properly formatted FAQ -- which includes broad industry questions linking out to specific pages with the question itself as the anchor text -- it can lead to greater relevancy for users trying to find general industry information.

In-depth articles: Google groups these types of articles, designated as in-depth articles, together to show that they are detailed analyses of certain subjects. Add schema.org markup to your data-rich, informative content to appear in these listings; implementing Google+ authorship will further boost its credibility.

2. Set the type for better conversion rates. Users searching for answers want to find it fast. If a website’s pages have content with a font that’s too hard to read, users won’t take the time to try and decipher it. Hummingbird has tried to simplify the search process; its focus on tailored search results speaks to internet users’ need for speed. If users don’t want to spend time looking through multiple result pages, they certainly don’t want to spend time trying to read illegible font.

Before resetting all your type, take a look at a few different components of typography:

Typeface: A particular design of type that include letters, numbers and symbols. Typefaces are often part of a type family of corresponding designs, for example, Times Roman, Helvetica and Courier.

Font: One style of typeface that has a specific weight, width and size.

Kerning: The adjustment of space between individual characters. This makes text more proportional and pleasing to the eye.

Tracking: Also called letter-spacing, this adjusts the space uniformly in a block of text.

Line length: The width of a block or line of text, measured between its right and left margins.

Leading: The space between lines of text. Closer leading fits more text on one page, but lowers readability.

Paying attention to these six facets of typography within your online content will help keep users on your website. Although there are many typefaces available, pick the one that’s easy to read over the one that has pretty, intricate designs.

3. Find alternatives to guest blogging. Google's spam expert Matt Cutts recently made waves by proclaiming that guest blogging was dead. Once a legitimate way to backlinks, spammers have made it harder for users -- and Google -- to find great content. The tactic can still be used, however, provided it is an authoritative blog (authorship helps!) with useful and original content. Instead of pumping out guest blog after guest blog, be selective about having one published or, alternatively, focus on other avenues for link building, such as:

Reverse guest blogging: Hire an established writer that is well-versed in the industry to write a post for your own blog.

Author Rank is a hot topic in both the content and search marketing industry.
What is Author Rank exactly? While Google hasn’t officially said
anything about it, Google’s chairman Eric Schmidt said this in his new book,
“The New Digital Age”.

search results, information tied to verified online profiles will be ranked
higher than content without such verification, which will result in most users
naturally clicking on the top (verified) results. The true cost of remaining
anonymous, then, might be irrelevance.”

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-IN;">There are
two ways to claim Google+ Authorship for your content. First off, if you have
an email address that matches your domain (you@yourdomain.com) and each piece
of content you have written on your website is clearly marked as by you, you
can log in to your Google+ account, visit the Google+ Authorship page, and enter your email
address.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-IN;">If you
don’t have an email address on each site you write content for, you can claim
authorship by adding a link to your Google+ profile to your author bios on each
site you write for using the following format.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-IN;">
Then add each site’s link to your Google+ profile under the Contributor To
section.

Google has rolled out several changes to how it shows results to a web user on its search page. The changes are subtle but noticeable. The two big changes are removal of lines from the clickable search results and introduction of a yellow label called "Ad/Ads" in front of the sponsored results.

Last year Google launched some pretty big design improvements for Search on mobile and tablet devices. Today they carried over several of those changes to the desktop experience. Google increased the size of result titles, removed the underlines, and evened out all the line heights. This improves readability and creates an overall cleaner look. Google also brought over our new ad labels from mobile, making the multi-device experience more consistent.
importantly promote your website/blog and help build your online reputation.

your website, you give a reason for visitors to keep returning to your site and
keep up to date with your latest posts. It also helps search engines to crawl
your site more frequently, as they have to update your latest blog post
entries, which ultimately helps you rank higher in search engine results pages

people may say that directory submission is dead! I believe that it isn’t as
you are increasing the likely hood of people seeing your website. It is purely
based on how effectively we are selecting those directories and how efficiently
we are choosing the category for submission. You could submit to general directories,
but for maximum effect, you are better off submitting to niche directories.
Of course, I agree that it gives quite delayed results, but it is worth doing
it.

popular unique post for your site, then other people may want to link to it.
Perhaps you have copied/published another website’s content on your site, don’t

your content is trustworthy, let others do it for you. This is another way to

on your site’s niche, you might find that listing in local directories may be
useful. You may have a website promoting your local business, therefore instead
of going global and facing huge competition, listing your website locally, so

Target Long Tail Keywords

A great benefit of staying focused with long-tail key terms is that they usually convert better, as well rank very soon as compare to short tail keywords. If you have a new website it can be difficult or bad choice to go after popular keywords right away. It's better to to write many quality articles on very specific keywords than to go after the ones with more search traffic.

Stick Around

The longer you are in business and producing quality online content, the more likely you are to pop up in search results for all related keywords. Starting a blog or churning out a bunch of articles is all fine and good, but keeping those activities going for years as opposed to months (or weeks) makes a huge difference.

Fully Optimize Your Articles Or Website

Meta title, description and keywords are 3 important ingredients to successfully optimized web page or article. These three ingredients are simple thing to fill out so take the time to do it each time, and you'll start to rank for your keywords much faster.

Remember Ethical Or White Hat Link Building

Keyword-embedded links or anchor text links are the base of off-page search engine optimization. The best part is that links can be easily created and totally free. Just ask vendors, partners, press, clients, your alma mater and any other credible source that you interact with to embed hyperlinked keywords back to your site for the terms that you are targeting. If the referring source has a high page rank, you should see a pop in your rankings in less than two months of them being published.

Use Google's Keyword Planner Tool

Use Google's Keyword Tool which is now well known by the name Google keyword planner tool to find long-tail keywords that are not as competitive, and then structure some content around those. If you are in a competitive niche, this is a way you can start building up some small recurring traffic and engage your users.

Start Blogging Or Guest Posting For Traffic

Guest posting or blogging is the best and fast source to build great web traffic. It will help you in increasing organic search, but always remember content marketing is a quality game and not a quantity game. Always do guest posting for content marketing.
Google keyword planner is now new tool for searching Keywords because keyword planner has replaced Google AdWords Keyword Tool. Behind every successful AdWords campaign are well planned out keywords and ad groups. In the past, you may have relied on tools like the Keyword Tool and Traffic Estimator to identify new keywords and ad groups, get traffic estimates, and choose competitive bids and budgets.

The key differences between Google Adwords Keyword Tool and Keyword Planner includes a more organized workflow for researching adwords and keywords, a clearer presentation of data, quick access to some nice historical graphs, and the ability to download historical data in spreadsheet form. In this article, I’ll show you each of these new or different features and how you can make use of them in your own keyword or Adwords research.

Keyword Planner

Now under stand the Understanding the Google Keyword Planner

The old Keyword Tool provided a few fields for you to launch your keyword research. That included any word or phrase (or list of them), your website or a competitor website URL, or a category.

However, when you look at the search form inside of the Keyword Planner, you’ll notice that it’s nearly identical to the original with only subtle differences in wording and the placement of a few search customization features. You’ll notice you can set keyword filters and other targeting filters (e.g.location, languages, negative keywords etc.) right here in the initial stage, rather than doing them later like in the old Keyword Tool.
Google officially shut down its Google Reader service from July 1, 2013. Google Reader is much loved service by news reader. Google says due to its lack of popularity they have to closed this service.

But this doesn't mean that people who love news are out of options because they have still lot of options.

Google Reader was created in 2005 and became one of the most popular RSS readers, allowing users to see a stream of updates from their selected websites. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and updates content from multiple sources into one feed, so users can quickly scan stories from many different websites. 'PIPE' new file sharing app by Facebook. After more than a year of teasing its service in beta and in invitation-only mode, a Facebook app called Pipe is finally launching this week to make file transferring easy and possible for the first time on the social network. With Pipe we can transfer upto 1GB of file easily. Its so easy just drag and drop that's it.

Facebook #1 social networking site has introduced hashtag, like twitter, allowing users to click and see what their friends think about trending topics. Company announced publicly that it is rolling out clickable hashtag, starting today.

Facebook said that it help user to find out the most trending topic or topic that is in news. It will also help advertisers to find hot spots of user activity around specific events or topics.

How Hashtag ( # Symbol ) Work in Facebook.

Hashtag work on Facebook exactly like it works on Twitter. For example if you’re composing a status update about how much you hate LeBron, you can add the hashtag #NBAFinals and your post will appear on a searchable #NBAFinals page along with the posts of everyone else who’s watching the game. Hashtag work like public conversations that help people more easily discover what others are saying about a specific topic.

Finally mat Cutts officially announced next generation of Penguin 2.0 . This time Penguin have big impact on web spam. According to Cutts this next generation of Penguin has brand new generation of algorithms. The previous version of Penguin would essentinally only look at the home page of a site. The latest generation of the Penguin is much deeper and has a very large impact in some small areas.

Penguin 2.0 rollout is now complete and affects 2.3 percent of English-U.S. queries, and that it affects non-English queries as well. Cutts wrote:

This is the fourth Penguin-related launch Google has done, but because this is an updated algorithm (not just a data refresh), we’ve been referring to this change as Penguin 2.0 internally. For more information on what SEOs should expect in the coming months, see the video that recently released.

Google's initial Penguin update originally rolled out in April 2012, and was followed by two data refreshes of the algorithm last year – in May and October.

Cutts also posted a link to a webspam report page, where anyone can flag sites they consider spam for the attentions of Google's engineers. The form doesn't ask for any identification by the reporting party, requiring only a copy/pasted URL.

Prominence of keywords is to place at the beginning of sentences and paragraphs your keywords. As with the addition of keywords often, while maintaining the readability of your content, basically put your keywords in the beginning of your content will not work. Should be in your content useful to the prominence of keywords fit the reader and actually flow with the rest of the content it contains.

Keyword Prominence:

Prominence of keywords is an important thing in optimizing a page, fame is a measure of keyword importance that indicates how close a keyword is the beginning of the analyzed page area. If a word is used in the beginning of the title, heading, or in the vicinity of the beginning of the visible text of the page, are deemed more important than the other words. Keyword Prominence is calculated separately for each major area of the page.

Take an example, as the key phrase is "SEO tips" and then look at the examples of possible titles that our pages may provide:

Tips for SEO – Solvater.com
SEO tips – Solvater.com

See the above two examples, there you can find the different keyword prominence like.

In the first sentence, the Keyword Prominence should be 70%, while in the second part the role that should be 100%. So hopefully now you understand the concept.

Domain Masking is usually offered by the registrar as a service. If you set up domain masking for a blogspot blog, For example

http://www.domainname.com domain is a mask for domainname.blogspot.com

When someone open http://www.domainname.com is really forwarding to domainname.blogspot.com without change in address in the address bar.The user continues to see http://www.domainname.com in the address bar although the site and its contents are really from domainname.blogspot.com.

Why use domain masking?

If you have an existing site that is hosted for free (such as Blogger or WordPress.com blog) to be able to give a short URL or address can be an advantage for you. Even if you are not willing to pay for hosting, which is a fast way to use your domain name.

Why should I think twice before masking domain? What is important?

It is certainly important to Google. If you rely on search engines for traffic, then you should seriously consider if you need to use masking domain name or if you can find another solution. As Domain Forwarding or change your web hosting

Google does not like duplicate content and masking the domain, shows two domains with exactly the same content. What will happen? Google has not released exact policy masking, but it is clear that only once duplicate content indexing, and not the URL or domain that you prefer.

I still want to use domain masking. What should I do?

Make sure you use if given an option to manage your domain name. 301 redirects (permanent)

It may be possible to do this in the settings when you select mask, domain, or the access to the management console server, so it is possible that this will not be available to you.

Many people using Twitter as a successful marketing tool. Some people using it to express their view and join as discussion community. But this post is not about why people use Twitter. Let's get to the point.

The # symbol, called a hash-tag, is used to categorize messages, mark keywords or topics in a Tweet.

Where to use Hash-tags ?

People use the hash-tag symbol # before a relevant keyword or phrase (no spaces) in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets and help them show more easily in Twitter Search.

Clicking on a hash tagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets marked with that keyword.

Hash-tags can occur anywhere in the Tweet – at the beginning, middle, or end.

Hash-tagged words that become very popular are often Trending Topics.

A hash tag is simply a way for people to search for tweets that have a common topic. For example, if you search on #FIND (or #Find or #find, because it's not case-sensitive),

In a way, hash tags allow you to create communities of people interested in the same topic by making it easier for them to find and share info related to it.

How to use hash-tags correctly:

If you Tweet with a hash-tag on a public account, anyone who does a search for that hash-tag may find your Tweet

Don't #spam #with #hash-tags. Don't over-tag a single Tweet. (Best practices recommend using no more than 2 hash-tags per Tweet.)

Use hash-tags only on Tweets relevant to the topic

The 'fetch as Google' in webmaster tools allows you to see your pages as Google sees them.

Though Google has gotten good at tracking down new web pages, it still offers multiple ways for site owners to inform it of URLs they want the search engine to crawl and index. Recently, Google added one more: Fetch as Google.

If you’re familiar with many of Google’s features, you know that Fetch as Google has been around for nearly two years. Webmasters can use it through Google Webmaster Tools. Tell Fetch as Google to crawl a specific URL on a site you’ve verified, and you’ll see your page the way Google would see it. This is great for figuring out and debugging website issues that don’t show up if you’re simply looking at the site through a web browser.

Now, though, Fetch as Google lets you take things one step further. If it successfully fetches your URL, you can request that Google index it by clicking a “Submit to index” link. You won’t want to do this with every page on your website, as there are important limits and points to consider, but it’s great to have this additional option.

One important point to keep in mind is that you can only submit 50 pages a week in this fashion. You can submit all pages linked from the URL you’re submitting you’re submitting as well, but you can only do that 10 times in a month. Additionally, Google notes that submissions of images or video are more appropriately made by using Sitemaps rather than Fetch as Google.

You should also keep in mind that submitting a URL in this way does not mean that Google will definitely put the page in its index. In its blog post on the topic, Google states “that we don’t guarantee that every URL submitted in this way will be indexed; we’ll still use our regular processes – the same ones we use on URLs discovered in any other way – to evaluate whether a URL belongs in our index.”

On the other hand, using Fetch as Googlebot does speed up the process of crawling your URLs. Google will do that within a day of your submission. It’s worth remembering that not everything Google crawls goes into its index. And not every URL that Google learns about gets crawled right away, in any case. As Vanessa Fox explained on Search Engine Land, it arranges the list of URLs it discovers in priority order before crawling them. Google uses a number of factors to determine the priority of a web page, including the page’s overall value, PageRank, frequency of change and how important Google thinks the page is (this is why news home pages tend to get crawled and indexed very quickly).

If you want to take advantage of this new way to submit URLs from your website to Google for crawling and possible inclusion in its index, it’s best to use it for new areas and categories on your site. If you’re making a major update, Fetch at Googlebot will also serve your need to get Google’s attention quickly. This will help you to speed up URL removal or cache updates as well.
